Production of lower-level radioactive wastes, as well as the reduction in radioactivity of HLW, is an important performance indicator in assessing the viability of a partitioning-transmutation system. We have begun to identify the chemical compositions and to quantify the amounts of radioactive wastes that may be generated by JAERI's processes. Long-lived radionuclides such as 
C and 
Ni and spallation products of Pb-Bi coolants such as 
Po (10
Bq/yr) are added to the existing inventory of these nuclides that are generated in the current fuel cycle. Spent salts of KCl-LiCl, which is not generated from the current fuel cycle, will be introduced as a waste.

The concept of transmutations of Tc-99 and I-129 to stable nuclides is an attractive option to reduce the long-term risk of the storage of high-level waste from nuclear reactors. For the target for transmutation of Tc-99, the thermal expansions and heat capacities of Tc-Ru alloys were measured to build a database of the Tc metal target. For the target for transmutation of I-129, literature survey and experimental studies on characterization and fabrication of targets were made to select suitable chemical forms for the target. In the literature survey, chemical forms of iodide, iodate and iodide oxide were considered.

An advanced water-cooled reactor concept named the Reduced-Moderation Water Reactor (RMWR) has been proposed to attain a high conversion ratio more than 1.0 and to achieve the negative void reactivity coefficient. At present, several types of design concepts satisfying both the design targets have been proposed based on the evaluation for the fuel without fission products and minor actinides. In this paper, the feasibility of the RMWR core is investigated and confirmed for the plutonium multiple recycling under advanced reprocessing schemes with low decontamination factors as proposed for the FBR fuel cycle.
